ガディマイ祭：動物供犠と人間の業(11)

９．人道的動物愛護運動の人間至上主義
今年のガディマイ祭の動物供犠は，11月28日（主に水牛），29日（ヤギほか）に催行された。

この動物供犠については，内外の動物愛護団体が激しい反対運動を繰り広げ，インドでは最高裁に訴え，動物の不法持ち出し禁止命令を出させることに成功した。ネパール政府にも圧力をかけ，関係諸法による規制強化を約束させた。要所には治安部隊1万4千が派遣され，動物検疫所も５か所開設された。

その結果，動物供犠そのものは阻止できなかったものの，供犠水牛は前回2009年の半分以下，４～５千頭にとどまったとみられており，この点では反対運動は大きな成果を上げたと動物愛護諸団体は評価している。

一方，ネパール政府と祭り関係者は，反対運動のさらなる激化を恐れ，今年は，ジャーナリストの入域を禁止した。リパブリカ記者はカメラを警官に没収された（のち返却）。

しかし，この情報化時代，参拝者のスマホやデジカメまで禁止することは無理であり，おそらく多数撮影され，これから続々ネットに掲載されていくであろう。しかも，それらがいずれも動物供犠の「リアルさ」を競うものとなることは避けられない。

動物が殺される様は，「リアル」であればあるほど，菜食主義者は無論のこと非菜食主義者であっても，日常生活においては直視に耐えられない。この点では両者の態度は共通している。

これは動物供犠支持派には圧倒的に不利な状況。反対運動が勢いを増すのは自然な成り行きであり，このままでは，2019年の次回動物供犠は実施できない可能性大と見ざるをえない。動物愛護派の完全勝利だ。

しかし，本当にそれでよいのだろうか？　動物の不法持ち込み，供犠前後の不衛生，見世物利権化，ダリット差別など，もっともな問題点をクリアし本来の動物供犠に立ち戻ったとしても，それでも動物供犠は，それ自体が悪であり禁止されなければならないのか？　

動物供犠禁止は，他の生命の犠牲によって生きざるをえない人間が，自らの業から目を背けて生きることを糊塗するためではないのか？　「人道的(humane)」こそが「人間至上主義（humanism）」なのではないか？

Thank you for taking action and donating to support our campaign against the world’s largest animal sacrifice at the Gadhimai festival in Nepal.

Because of your support, our comprehensive campaign included meeting with the president and prime minister of Nepal to directly request their intervention and lobbying the chief priest of the Gadhimai Temple through the night until just hours before the butchering started, in a last-minute attempt to stop the bloodshed.

Despite the festival proceeding, there were some positives. We were able to successfully petition the Supreme Court of India to order a halt to illegal border crossings, resulting in 114 arrests and more than 2,500 animals seized (pictured). The number of animals who reportedly died was significantly lower than in the past and, just as importantly, we built a foundation for continuing the fight.

Our commitment to prevent this bloodbath from happening again is greater than ever. We will do all we can over the next five years to put a permanent end to the massacre of animals at Gadhimai.
